Fall has arrived in all its crisp, colorful glory! The temperatures have dropped, the leaves have begun to change; and yes, pumpkin-spiced everything is now available in stores. It’s indeed time to embrace the changing of seasons, wouldn’t you say? And what better way to do so than by packing up the car with and heading outdoors to create some new memories with your family?
A favourite outdoor activity among many families around Ottawa is apple picking. In fact, for most, apple picking is a fall tradition! Spend the afternoon with your family at one of the several apple orchards we have around Ottawa’s West End:
Pinewood Orchards: Located in Ottawa’s west end community of Kanata, Pinewood Orchards is a beautiful choice for you and your family to try something new (or re-visit year after year). Part of the National Capital Commission’s Greenbelt, this apple orchard offers delicious apples from over 800 trees!
Dekok Family Berry Farm: Also located in Kanata, Dekok Family Berry Farm is an excellent place to purchase your apples (and berries in the summer months!) for some good, old-fashioned fall baking. Just 20 minutes from the heart of Ottawa, this orchard has something for everyone – even play structures for the kids to enjoy post-climb!
If you’re one to favour more variety in your produce – and enjoy supporting local vendors – then why not stop in at one of the many farmer’s markets around town? One of the best known Saturday activities for those who live in Carp (and surrounding areas) is the Carp Farmer’s Market. Entering their 27th season, the Carp Farmer’s Market runs every Saturday from 8:00AM to 1:00PM from May to October; selling fruits, vegetables, baked goods – even crafts! In short, definitely something for everyone!
So let’s welcome the cooler temperatures and crisp fall air this season (with an even crispier apple in hand). And don’t forget to turn your findings into something delicious!
